affix

In morphology, an affix is a morpheme which cannot stand alone, but must be attached to some other element. As such, it is a bound morpheme. English only features prefixes and suffixes, but other languages also feature infixes and circumfixes. (Note: Some writers have referred to English affixes which occur between another affix and the root as infixes, but this usage is generally regarded as inaccurate.)
