Cut back on the avocado toast

Post by Stevenloan » Tue Feb 04, 2020 2:42 pm

A: It was a good week for Jeff Bezos: The world's richest person got even richer.
B: Lucky thing he's not taxed like regular working people are. He might need to cut back on the avocado toast, maybe even get a 2nd job, if that were the case.

- Hi guys! I couldn't find the meaning of the phrase "cut back on the avocado toast" online. What does it mean in this situation?

Thanks a lot!

My take:

Person B is making some scathing comments about the ability of Jeff Bezos, who is clearly able to afford whatever he wants, to avoid paying tax on his revenues from Amazon, which he owns (a consequence of Amazon's aggressive tax planning and exploitation of taxation loopholes around the world).

So "cutting back on the avocado toast" is Person B's self-coined oblique reference to Bezos's wealth (avocados being associated with self-indulgence or failure to connect with ordinary people). President Obama was often accused in a similar way of eating arugula (known as rocket in British English), a type of lettuce associated with out-of-touch "liberals".

Wikipedia has the following comment:

"Avocado toast is a type of open sandwich or toast made with mashed avocado and salt, pepper, and citrus juice on toast. Potential additional ingredients that enhance the flavor are olive oil, hummus, red pepper flakes, feta, dukkah, tomato, and many other toppings.

Relatively recently, avocado toast became a food trend of the 2010s. It has appeared on café menus since at least the 1990s. Following avocado toast's elevation to trend status, the act of ordering avocado toast at a café was criticised as a symbol of frivolous spending."
