I'm still alive

Post by Stevenloan » Wed Jul 03, 2019 6:43 am

A: How are you?
B: I'm fine. Thank you. And you?
A: I'm great.Thanks.

Hi everybody! Is it perfectly acceptable to say "I'm still alive" or "I'm still breathing" instead of saying the boring answer "I'm fine"?

Thanks so much!

Not always, Steve. I wouldn't respond to that question with "I'm still alive/breathing", unless there was some doubt about my health to start with. If I had just recovered from a serious illness or undergone a major surgery I might use that jokingly. Saying that you are alive or breathing as a response to "How are you" does not indicate good health...you may be only slightly better than dead. If you are "alive and well" or "alive and kicking", that suggests some vitality or vigour.

I have friends who say that - jokingly - but they haven't just recovered from an illness. We're all old, so I suppose that's our excuse. My dad used to say he had one foot in the grave & the other on a banana peel. Then one day the banana peel slipped - which he would have said had he still been around to say it!

Another option would be "still here."

The reality is that 99% (unverified) will simply answer "I'm fine" because neither the question nor the answer have any value. It is just a social exchange.

When the question is asked in more social circles, or on occasions where there is a relationship (work, friendship, family, team), a whole variety of answers can be appropriate.
Oh, soldiering on
muddling through
on top of the world
never better
known better days
best not ask
well I survived

I'm puzzled therefore I think.

I usually say, "Still standing!" or "On the right side of the grass", or being Welsh, "Tidy!".

"On the right side of the grass"... I haven't heard that before, but I like it. :)

Bob: I haven't heard this before, either. But I like it too. I also like the answer "Tidy" :) Thank you so much for the interesting terms.
