Hi everyone! What do you call the black square thing around the microphone? Could you please tell me what it is used for?

Your answers will be highly appreciated.

I don't know what they are called but the purpose is more obvious in this photograph ...

They are essentially a name tag but also act as advertising if the person is on camera.

I'm puzzled therefore I think.

A friend of mine is a television sound engineer, so I asked him.
They are called MICROPHONE FLAGS

The black foam thingy is called a windscreen .

“Windscreen and grilles are covers that improve the sound quality of a microphone. Normally a windscreen is made from foam and a grille from metal. They act as a filter to prevent popping, breath sound, moisture and wind noise from reaching your mic.”

Windscreens (or metal grilles) and microphone flags often go together.
