1a) The Pennsylvania woman who was held captive for five years alongside her husband Joshua Boyle and children in Afghanistan, spoke out publicly for the first time since returning home, saying that she prefers to go by her married name, Caitlan Boyle.

"1a" is a modified version of "1", made up by me.

Are '1' and "1a" grammatically correct?

Don't we have to use the present perfect tense with 'since'?
Doesn't it have to be 'has spoken out publicly for the first time since returning home'?

Gratefully,
Navi.
