gut soup

Meaning vomit. I would like to use it but I'm not too sure about its viability, as I get only 109 hits--a microscopically small number for entrenched slang. Could anyone with teeners confirm this one? Thanks guys

I wonder why there are so many expressions and phrases for this act.

Dale, For what it’s worth, in looking through the Google hits for ‘gut soup,’ it looks to me as though it appears in enough credible places, to conclude that it is real and current.

Thank you Ken. It's very difficult deciding when a term is widespread enough to be considered "current" (whatever that means). One criterion I use is to filter the expression (placing it of course in the "exact phrase" box) by ensconcing a couple of "correct English" synonyms for the term in the "at least one" box as part of the title; eg, "intitle:vomit intitle:regurgitate" Over 100 hits I then consider "current"

Using this criterion, "barf" yields 704 hits but "gut soup" only 1. Its relative rarity is confirmed by the fact that at age 74, I had never heard it myself; So for my purposes I judge it spurious

Thus my query. Admittedly the above criterion is somewhat arbitrary, and I am open to sugestions

Dale I would seriously query your use of Google hits as having some kind of veracity .. 100 hits in my experience could all be from the one questionable source or from one site where, for whatever reason, that word is popular .. hardly widespread .. and as Ken is always reminding us the prevalence of urbam myths and folk etymology only add to the questionable nature of accepting Google as some kind of authoritative source .. and incidently why not Lycos or Alta Vista ?? .. have you ever entered the same word into separate search engines and wondered over the alternative answers ?? .. and the growing commercialism of Google must also be considered ..

Wiz, Well here’s a strange turn of events. I’m usually telling you to refer to reliable sources and you’re usually telling me I rely too much on reliable sources. And here I am saying ‘gut soup’ looks real based on a paltry number of Google hits. I agree with you that this one is pretty shaky, but I tend to think that ‘gut soup’ is out there, although in limited use. Not that the following quote is from the greatest site in the world, but it does cater to kids and they had a world of choices for things to call ‘puke’ but they said the following:

“Puke is a lot of things. You may have heard these words to describe it: vomit, throw up, upchuck, GUT SOUP, ralphing, and barf.” http://kidshealth.org/kid/talk/yucky/puke.html

So, although it has not made it into any slang dictionaries that I checked, and although a low number of hits on the internet is nothing to hang your hat on, I tend to think that the expression is used by some segment of folks and, although not a bell-ringer, it does exist. I am not talking about a bogus derivation here (as urban legends are), or whether an expression is widely used or accepted, but whether it is used by more than one or two guys in a bar, and I would guess from the above movie review and the kid’s health site, that it is.

.. Dale Lycos and Alta Vista are search engines in the same vein as Google .. I am fairly certain that if you simply put the old WWW. in front of the word and added the equally famous .com at the end you would find them and a whole new world of searching .. I remember that once I had a table that listed all the main search engines with their particular strengths and weaknesses but have no idea where it has gone .. sorry ..
