Meaning of abbr. "app.", encountered in word usage articles.

Post by cameron2776 » Mon Jul 03, 2017 7:45 pm

As I study the etymology of a word, I usually peruse the section of earliest known usage---wherein my question originates. Despite my independent efforts, I can not find a reliable explanation of the abbreviation "app." I encounter this abbreviation, usually, in the introduction of a usage example. I'm sure many of you will find this an elementary question, hence my independent efforts to discover its meaning; yet, I am at that impasse when one must expose ignorance in exchange for assistance. Thank you kindly.

I'm fairly confident that it stands for 'apparently'.

Just to be sure, could you quote a typical example of the usage you've found plus a note of the source?

To eliminate the obvious: have you checked the dictionary's list of abbreviations (which is typically printed either inside the front or back cover or on one of the pages preceding the alphabetical entries)?

I have always assumed "Application".

Cameron, thank you for your post it has lead me back to the world of abbreviations lol. (Sorry I had to do that.)

I agree with Erik but it is worth noting that App. and app. are not the same.

With the right context almost anything can sound appropriate.

Is that some kind of bagpipes? I take the terms 'blow' and 'appalling' to be a significant clue.
