I have a simple explanation. This is a complex word composed of "under"and "stand".
It came from Spain when Arab Muslims governed this area about 500 years ago. In AlAzhar University, Egypt, scholars "Sikhs" in Arabic; tended to sit under a large stand ; "amood" in Arabic; then the students had to sit in front of the teacher to get the knowledge and experience.Yes, they had to sit "under - stand" to get their lessons.
This way of learning was transferred to Spain and after a while to all European countries. So the only way to get knowledge was to sit under the stand and listen to the teachers !!!

Welcome Hos. Thank you for sharing your thinking. I am not saying that you are wrong, but it really does have the feel of Folk Etymology. Have a look at the thread that Phil's link takes you to. I think that the Germanic root theory is a bit more understandable.
