My new colleague tells me he usually takes pictures here and there at weekends. I want to ask him what kinds of pictures he takes. Are the two questions below used correctly in this case?

1. What do you take pictures of?
2. What types of pictures do you shoot?

Your answers will be greatly appreciated.

Sentence 1 is absolutely fine.

To my ear, "kind" sounds better than "type" in sentence 2:
  • What kind(s) of pictures do you take?
  • What kind(s) of photos do you shoot?
I think that "shoot" works better with "photo" and "take" works better with "picture".

As far as "kinds of" vs "kind of", I wrote at length about that in this thread.
