Easier on gas

A: American Trucks Are Pointlessly Killing People. They're too big, and the reason is aesthetics, not practicality, writes Ryan Cooper.
B: People have the right to drive whatever makes them happy. I think the people who modify diesels so they blow black smoke and crap all over everything should be open season. I personally have a truck(an old one with dents) that I use as a truck. For towing and hauling stuff. It also serves as a backup to my car. I think cars that are easier on gas are a better commuter vehicle. But whatever.
- Hi guys! I Googled and couldn't find the meaning of "to be easier on gas". What does the phrase mean in this situation?
Thanks so much!
