Re: chip on or chip off
Since I collect certain kinds of pottery, I'd prefer: "It has a chip on the (whatever)." It would make a difference to me (& most collectors) where the chip is - some are more obvious than others.

Ah, Jim, you do not change! It is refreshing to see that pedantry is alive and well!

Re: chip on or chip off
Seriously, though ...
I am not sure whether I would use "chip on it" and "chip off it" differently (if I were to use "chip off it" at all):

I am not sure whether I would use "chip on it" and "chip off it" differently (if I were to use "chip off it" at all):
- It has a chip on it -> The chip is small and can possibly be hidden or would not really be noticed.
- It has a chip off it -> There is a significant lump missing

Re: chip on or chip off
For me:
it has a crack in it
it has a mark on it
it has a chip off it.
The chip is a small fragment that has come off. The bowl is chipped ( or has a chip off it). The floor might have that chip on it.

Re: chip on or chip off
I like "The bowl is chipped." No muss no fuss!

What are you collecting?
Of the Upsala Ekeby, Dybdahl, and related work that I collect, chips on or off are not acceptable. Of course they are not all-that-rare, so perfect examples more plentiful.

Re: chip on or chip off
California colorware. I'm not a purist so I have some newer Metlox that I really like. The old stuff, from the '30s & '40s is fantastic - and so are the prices!
Re: chip on or chip off
"The plate has a chip on it" never happens. Sheba always licks the platter clean. Very fond of chips, she is - either US chips or UK chips...

Sturdy-looking stuff, and the "California Mobile" design is eye-catching. Are the prices fantastically-high, or fantastically-low?BonnieL wrote: ↑Mon Nov 05, 2018 2:39 amCalifornia colorware.
