Dad: Sweetie! We need to talk.
Daughter: Regarding?
Dad: You were raised in a good family, so you'd better stop hanging around with the bad crowds. I cannot afford gossip.

Hi everybody! I say "I cannot afford gossip" to mean "I don't want people gossiping about this". Is it used correct in this case?

Yes it is fine. It means that gossip could have an affect on his life.
