Can one say

a. He didn't drive and instead asked me to.
b. He didn't drive, instead asking me to.

c. He was too much of a coward to go talk to the manager, and instead asked me to.
d. He was too much of a coward to go talk to the manager, instead asking me to.

?

Many thanks

It seems to me that b and d are rather nonsensical with the "instead asking". "Instead asked" would work.
