Close to it

A father: Why are you crying? Did your boyfriend hit you?
A daughter: No, but he was close to it, I think.

Hi you guys! I use "but he was close to it" here to mean that "but he almost did it". Is it correct?

You are correct. But for the sake of clarity: "he was close to making a punch but restrained himself" rather than "he was close to it and missed".
