Welfare

Post by Stevenloan » Sun Jun 25, 2017 4:53 pm

Hi everyone! A new male neighbor moved in across from my house last month. Sometimes we talk to each other. The next-door neighbor who always pick fights with me suddenly tells me that "If I were you, I'd stay away from the new neighbor. He is dangerous.". I really don't know why he suddenly cares about me. Can I say the following sentences in this situation?

1. Why are you suddenly concerned about my well-being?
2. Why the sudden concern for my welfare?
3. Why do you care about my safety unexpectedly?

Thanks so much!

q or 2 are ok. 2 can also be varied to: "what's the sudden concern for my welfare?"

With the right context almost anything can sound appropriate.

tony h: Thanks for your input. What do you mean by "q or 2"?

"q" is the well known typo meaning "1" (On an English keyboard 1 is the key above q)

I would modify 3) as follows:

Why do you care about my safety unexpectedly? --> Why do you unexpectedly care about my safety?

I can't give you a logical reason, but the word order in my variant just sounds more natural to my ear.

Interestingly if you change care or concern for "interest" you get an equally good sentence but suspect more self-interest.

Why the sudden concern for my welfare?
Why the sudden interest in my welfare?
