The sense of But this is English here is not:

We're considering just the English language here,

but

But this is English, with all its inconsistencies and tricky constructions (with which comment you obviously agree).

I can't 'work out an answer for myself' because different authorities use the word noun in different ways; if one accepts both the contrasting definitions, one is forced to conclude that some nouns are not nouns. For such a basic term, there needs to be a consensus.
