What is the etymology and earliest usage of the word, "ATLANTIC"?

Thank you.

No, it would have probably been along the lines of "gods of our fair island (pb[theirselves])please do not continue....please make our island not keep moving! glub glub"

Che, See Who named the Atlantic Ocean?. The OED gives the 1601 quote in that posting as the earliest usage. My 1387 quote beats that, but the spelling may not be close enough for it to qualify as earliest.

woz you set me wondering. Surely PC is not a modern phenomenon? Surely every age must have its fair-share of politically incorrect phrases. Maybe we have an unfair-share
