The approaching ban on anonymous comments might be examined
on the basis of what real damage is done to anything other than vanity.Once again we see " Vanity, vanity all is vanity".

This posting strikes me as an example of a coupling of considerable pomposity of purpose with an equivalent nullity of thought.

Quite apart from any other consideration, the appearance of a succession of anonymous postings in a given thread makes it almost impossible to follow the development of a discussion (i.e. who said what), or any sense of the context of the comments based on prior knowledge concerning the poster's attitudes or background. How bloody useful is that?!

You know, guys like you slay me. People are perfectly free to identify themselves as ’12,’ ‘AB’ (and many already do) or whatever the heck they choose. Ain’t a whole lot of vanity involved there – but I suppose if you think hard enough about it you could squeeze some out. All we really want is some sort of mark for the reasons Erik Kowal points out above (I personally think one’s real name is as good an identifier as any, but that’s just a matter of personal taste). In most human interactions people (even you) have names and faces. Why all your paranoia here?

As far as I'm concerned, amenity is fine with me except when one becomes annoying; that is if you have the same idea of it as I do. I don't come to this web to teach, I come to learn and illustrate what I have learned. If I'm annoying, have the boss tell me that I am and I'll leave and never return, leaving this web unequivocally yours.

Dear Vanity .. the thrust and parry of posting on a board such as this one is intellectualy stimulating .. the small victories and the bigger defeats are a source of fun .. if something that I post along the way actually helps someone to better understand the wonder of the English language then that is a bonus .. I want my chosen nic to appear .. I am not ashamed of my comments, right or wrong .. I have no way of knowing if a "real" name, eg Eric Kowal, does appear on his birth certificate but then who cares .. to me it is an identifier and is only as valid as Ahmed or Simple Simon or Ken G .. I post far and wide as Wizard of Oz or WoZ and remain true to his character .. are you ashamed of who you are ??

" nullity of thought " nice phrase reminiscent of " I have come to bury Caesar, not to praise him"
