From a hospital employee newsletter: "Romance that Began in the ER Was Consummated in the Hospital Chapel"

The editor swears she meant "Consecrated."

Not quite a headline, but a sign I saw today on one of those hideous illuminated do-it-yourself signage boards that infest the roadsides of the USA - in this case, under the canopy of a Phillips 66 gas station:
PRAY FOR ED'S RETIREMENT
Now if I were Ed I would be touched to know there were people out there who prized my welfare so much that they would be generous enough to proclaim it to all and sundry, even to all the anonymous transient trade merely passing through ...

I remember when I was a senior in high school, we had to take a course in Illinois history. While doing some research for a paper I was writing, I came across the story of a man from the small town of Oblong, IL who married a woman from the town of Normal, IL. A newspaper of the time allegedly ran this headline: OBLONG MAN TO WED NORMAL GIRL.

If a man, a Normale; if a woman, a Normalette.

This week's World Wide Words email newsletter contains a reader-submitted caption to a Daily Telegraph website photo of British celebrity Ben John that illustrates rather splendidly (if possibly inadvertently) the English tradition of the studied insult:
"Unfortunately, his efforts to make it on Australian TV have not been particularly unsuccessful."
