(( Hello all. In this letter I'm trying not to sound snotty or mean, but I'm also not this guy's best pal. Really appreciate the help. Great website! ))


Dear Mr. Brown:

As per provincial labour regulations, please accept this letter as one week notice for termination of your employment with The Security Company.

As you well know there has been significant difficulty in finding a job site and shift that fit your busy schedule. I find it too high-maintenance and chaotic to continue trying to work around your schedule, as you continue to change it. This is the primary reason for your termination. I appreciate your attempts at providing the office with written requests for time off, however they usually come across as demands. Furthermore, since you started providing us with written requests, the frequency has increased.

Repeatedly your supervisors have asked you to adhere to the company guidelines for uniform wear and you have consistently ignored them. You were issued a company handbook and instructed to read and follow it's directions. It has been brought to my attention that you are still not following the guidelines for uniform wear and personal jewellery.

As well, your argumentative attitude towards your superiors is unacceptable. Through the course of your time here, I have seen no indication that you intend to change that.

You recently advised me that you are pursuing a position with Employee Insurance. I wish you the best of luck with that, and hope for your success. For your reference I have attached a copy of our Branch Office Protocol, as well as company Standards of Employment, which you signed. Please note the highlighted sections and your signature on the reverse.

I appreciate the time you have spent with this company. If you have any questions you may contact our office at 403.342.6020

Terminations should be brief, quickly to the point and need not offer detailed explanations

Dear Mr. Brown:

Thanks for your reply Lyn. I've always had the impression that letters of this sort should have some brief explanation. I do prefer your method, though.

For "follow it's directions" read "follow its directions." The apostrophy is used only when contracting "it is" not as a possessive form meaning "belonging to it". Now can somebody straighten me on on whether the period in that last phrase should have gone inside or outside the quotes?

Depends on whether your are using British English or American English. In British English, the quotes would have been inside the period. In American English, it's just as you typed it.

I think your letter is fine. Sounds like this guy doesnt have a clue on how to appreciate the fact that he even has a job much less performe it within the company standards.I also feel that giving him the precise reasons why he is being terminated may just have taught him to be a better employee on his next endeavor. Please dont pick apart my spelling or grammar I'm trying to make a point not win an essay contest!
