this is a pargraph out of an article for the paper:

Several youth were present and awarded door prizes. They blessed the night with their voices in singing the dinner prayer for the group.

If it were submitted to me as a newspaper editor in that form, it would be severely edited. "They blessed the night . . ." would be edited to "They sang the dinner prayer."
As a former newspaper editor, I can say that correspondents were instructed to stick to basic facts, not pad their articles with mush.
