apologizing

When I got home I found a letter on the floor that my wife had written for our eight-year-old daughter, apologizing to her teacher that she had gotten to school late due to the flu.

I would like to know if "apologizing" means "1" or" "2".
1. by apologizing
2. and apologized

I am sorry to have taken so long to answer, but you have posted your question in the wrong category. We only look here for research purposes.

As for your question, I am afraid that I have absolutely no idea what you are asking.
