Merriam-Webster has recently put online a visual dictionary, which is a useful tool for getting to know the names of a wide variety of objects. This is achieved by associating a word with a picture of the object it represents.
You can search the visual categories to find words that are relevant to a particular object, or you can find the meaning of a word by typing it into the search box on the page and clicking on the resulting hit(s) to view images of the object(s) that the word represents.
The site is probably better viewed with Internet Explorer rather than Firefox, which in my experience it tends to crash (though this is possibly a side effect of all the browser add-ons I have installed).
