I always assumed that they were just too busy to waste time on letters that weren't really necessary. Living right upstairs, for the past 60 odd years, I'm pretty familiar with Amlish but I never noticed the missing "e" in axe. And here I thought it was just extra "u"s they had a problem with. They probably miss out on a lot of Scrabble points.

And the double "L": as in traveler vs. traveller.
