I know it as well as my own name, which at my advanced age I'm also not sure of sometimes. It means fostering or provoking further inquiry or research and possibly it's derived from some fellow of historical significance

That could require a bit of Sherlocking

Could be but it's a pretty common word and I'll bet Ken or Phil or other academic participant comes up with it within a few posts

Hate to seem pushy but to coin an outrageous mixed metaphor it's on the tip of the tongue and driving me bats

Here's a wild guess that does not match your definition but which, on an outside chance, could be what you are looking for to put you out of your abject misery.

How about EUREKA, an expression of triumph at making a discovery. It was supposedly what Archimedes cried out while running naked through the streets after discovering (while taking a bath) how to calculate the volume of an irregularly-shaped object and thus its density in order to tell if the king's crown was made of pure gold.

I'm not sure what it is you want?
Are you looking for a synonymous verb for fostering or provoking further inquiry or research.
Have you tried a thesaurus?

Ken: No but thanks, good try

Phil yes I have with no luck whatever. Grossly disappointed with the typical online thesaurus

Pythagorize vb. To speculate after the manner of Pythagoras.

Any closer or are we looking for more recent historical figures?

Wish I could remember. I think the word is used as adjective

Try Socrates...thesis, antithesis, synthesis.
He certainly died for subverting youth by encouraging them to make further enquiries and research.

That sounds right, Tony -- Socratic. Or Aristotelian.
