.. I grew up with the Newcastle Morning Herald & Miners Advocate which then became the Newcastle Herald and now The Herald with each name change only heralding a merger/takeover and greater centralisation of news to become Sydneycentric ..

I love this kind of stuff.

After ploughing through and consolidating information from just a few internet sources, I have generated the following list of idiosyncratic newspaper titles from Australia and the United States. These just scratch the tip of the iceberg, as is apparent from the massive number of titles published in North Carolina alone. Some have ceased publication or have subsequently changed their names. Wherever I could, I have indicated the town/city of origin as well as the state. In some cases I was not sure whether the title is/was prefaced by 'The…'; when in doubt, I left it out. Sources are indicated at the end of this posting.

Well in Cleveland we have The Plain Dealer and Akron has The Beacon Journal. One of Cleveland's smaller paper is the Call & Post.

One of the Chicago suburbs (I can't remember which one) has a newspaper called the "Beacon-News." One of my former co-workers always called it the "Be-Confused."

I came across the term "co-worker" yesterday during our pilgrimage to IKEA
...(a dangerous home furnishing and most of everything else store from Sweden with well designed goods at prices such that one would be rude not to buy them, so when you go to get a box of candles you find you are at the checkout with 2 trolleys full of stuff totalling £350)....
and it struck me to ask the till assistant whether she had any views on being referred-to as "the co-worker at the till" rather than "the person at the till".
She said she'd never really thought about it, but I was left with a feeling that it is de-personalising and I would be uncomfortable using the term.
Any views?

I don't like "co-worker" either Tony. I can't see what is wrong with "colleague" or even "work-mate". In the days when south Wales was mining coal, two men who worked underground together were "butties".

Personally, I prefer the term used by Scott Adams ("Dilbert" creator): cow-orker. It just has a better sound somehow!

My wife remembers the Liverpool Echo, which I believe, is still in print. As a child she would hear the newpaper vendor, (for those of you old enough to remember when newspapers were sold on the street) who would call out, in typical Liverpudlian, "Exspreck 'n Ecker". He also hawked the Daily Express, also still in print, with its symbol of a chained knight. Lord Beaverbrook's protest to the rise of socialism in post-war Britain. Can anyone tell me if it was unchained during the Thatcher years and have the chains been reinstated?

Wiz, an interesting name. Fairbanks Alaska has the Daily News-Miner which has a web cam showing the current weather state of affairs in downtown Fairbanks. If you are feeling a need of some cooling thoughts during your antipodean summer, try their web site at: http://newsminer.com/ and click on Arctic Cam: it's about -36f there now.

How about the London News of the World. Also known as the "Screws of the World" from its habit of printing salacious articles.
