This one had me puzzled for quite a while!

You're not dense, Lois. I for one am glad you asked. I still couldn't figure it out either, even with the so-called "hints"! I was just too embarrassed to ask someone to explain it.

Changing an accent

It would be even harder to teach him how many syllables to add if he wanted to learn a (Nashville) Tennessee accent, Lois! I swear, Nashvillians stretch out the word "tomorrow" to at least 9 syllables! I've never quite been able to duplicate it. If Scarlet O'Hara had been from Nashville, it would ha...

Phase origin [a.k.a. 'that being said' -- Forum Mod.]

Just set your phaser to "stun," Meirav, and then you can safely point it at both James and Boston Joe!

possessive of Arkansas / other words ending in S

Arkansasians/Arkansians/Arkansawites/whatever-they-call-themselves don't really need to worry about a revised name for "inverted comma," because they (like most Americans) call it an "apsotrophe."

Green Homes

How about "Bio-Homes," which brings up images of bio-domes. (And, no, I'm not thinking about that horrible Pauly Shore movie . . . wait a minute, ALL Pauly Shore movies are horrible!)

interior desing [a.k.a. interior design -- Forum Mod.]

I have been known to sing in the shower (which is in the interior of my home), but I don't usually DE-sing, either in the interior or exterior.

Maybe spelling doesn't count in college-level papers anymore?

Wow, Anna! I've never even had the opportunity (or need) to say "we have many cows" in ONE language, let alone several dozen! I guess I just don't live life in the fast lane like you must! ;-)

possessive of Arkansas / other words ending in S

I have always seen and written the possessive form of my state as Illinois', so I would assume that Arkansas would follow the same pattern. Although the final "s" is silent in both state names, the "s" is actually pronounced in the possessive: " The State Urinal-Register (or is that Journal-Register...

The plural of surnames ending in "y"

No, Quoc, it's just the opposite. Your # 1 is wrong, and your # 2 is correct. And, Erik, you can only get in the Griffydoor if you know the correct password for the fat lady. Since I'm the only Griffy living here, my sign actually should read: "THE Griffy Lives Here." But I kind of like the idea of ...

The plural of surnames ending in "y"

Meirav, I don't know the "official" rule, but I've always pluralized my last name thusly: "The Griffys would like to invite you to . . . ." Since my name is misspelled so frequently anyway (I've seen it spelled at least a dozen different ways), I don't want to confuse anyone by using "Griffies" as t...
