Re: Window to the brain

This is serendipitous as I have just stumbled across Julian Jaynes theory and book called The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind . In which he argues that the conscious and subconscious were not originally integrated and "self-aware". They were separate and the "conscious...

Well in Cleveland we have The Plain Dealer and Akron has The Beacon Journal. One of Cleveland's smaller paper is the Call & Post.

He, she or it

I'm not from the UK and it that instant I would probably slip in "they" although in writing I most certainly would edit it to read "it".

people vs person

Exactly my thoughts: I suppose one should be allowed to pick and choose whether they want to focus on the collective or the plurality of the individual.

Persons who insist on the use of people are the most commonpersons in terms of language.

Is that a little overkill?

sentences

I think that both sentences even with the suggested corrections are awkward. I would suggest the following, keeping as much of the original language and the ideas I interpreted: 1. She sat deeply in thought at the [or "a" whatever] table in the coffee shop, chin supported by her hands. 2. It is somet...

Would + verb vs verb

2 has to be past tense, gd, otherwise it would be "reads". I think perhaps though Quoc is confusing the conditional tense (presented in #1) and the polite form of "would like/love" instead of "want". I disagree with russ's interpreation of 5&6. Both seem to imply a guess to me. #5 however seems to l...

If I did it

gd, I understand your sentiments. But honestly most of my friends wouldn't even think of this complex sentence structure. They would more likely say something like, "i aint do it, ida did it lik dis"

If I did it

If I said it, I would say, "If I did it, I would have done it differently" (that sounds best to me) And as for my version of the full title, "If I did it, here's what would have happened". Having recently graduated from highschool, I can veritably say that they (the ubiquitous "they") taught us that...

When I read Quoc's statement it didn't "sound" exactly right and after playing with it a little I came up with: He is in a holiday mode. The hyphenated version is OK to me on paper but still doesn't sound right. Where Phil would remove "the" from his sentence, I would either leave it or change it to...

Russ, I kind of shared your sentiments about readers expecting, you so eloquently put, the macabre, and not just the mundane. I liked the aspect of the unreal creeping into the readers mind just like the people in the story who don't know whether the Inspectre even "exists", or whether he's human. I...

How's everyone doing? I haven't posted in a while but here goes! I'm developed a character who's a detective/urban legend type and he fights crime by solving the cases for the police (who are just lightyears behind) and sending them the evidence or a note leading them to the evidence. I call him: In...
