Re: Closure of the Wordwizard site
Oh, I'm going to miss this site & and all of you wonderful people so willing to answer questions! Wordwizard has always reminded me of Evan Morris's The Word Detective. I read thru all his entries until I got to the end - the end of his health and life. I missed it horribly, then found this site. At...

Re: Y'all
After my daughter moved to Texas she picked it up, so I hear it a lot from her. Now I use it. It's a very handy word!
Tho I may be the only person in our small NW town to use it. I do agree with the person in your example - it's better than "you guys."

Re: Lose and Shed
Shed. To lose hair would mean going bald.
True life example: My donkeys shed every summer, but last year Clare was losing hair in patches due to a skin problem.

Re: Temporary friend
Delightful memory, perhaps? I have a few of those. Can't remember the names - if I ever knew them - but the encounters were memorable.

Re: What's it got in it?
I'm a pretty good cook and often get asked what is in a dish, meaning what ingredients. The only time I get asked what's inside something is if it's stuffed. Which I don't do too often. And a helpful hint for those who take things to potlucks, please print a list of ingredients & put it by the dish....

No way! PLEASE offer me a seat! Standing in one place for any length of time becomes painful & potentially dangerous - my balance isn't good. That professor is an idiot. We all have different health problems & sitting on the bus, train, or while waiting in line to be helped isn't "taking it easy." I...

Re: Drop by unexpectedly
I don't care for it either, which is one of the reasons I now live way off the beaten path. Anyone who shows up unexpectedly is either lost or up to no good.

Re: Using glasses
I've been wearing glasses for almost 60 years, so I'm used to them now. :D About 20 years ago I realized I needed reading glasses. I tried bifocals but simply couldn't adjust. I'm grateful for computers. I read the local paper online because I can increase the size of the print. We still get the pap...

Re: Religion - politics - weather
I'm one of the rare liberals in a very conservative area. I also hate conflict so politics is out, religion is iffy. Weather is a safe topic unless someone starts ranting that climate change is not real.
I stay home a lot.

Can't afford cable. Haven't watched tv in years. Mostly we watch dvds - our own or from the library.

Re: A ferry
We take the ferry across Lake Roosevelt. It's an open barge so we do stay in the car if the weather's bad. But on a nice day it's fun to walk around. It only runs during daylight hours so at night we have to take the bridge - which takes us an extra 40 miles or so.

Re: Get off at
Correct. I'm not current on today's slang, but "get it on" would be understood as sexual. As far as I know, "get off with someone" does not exist as an established idiom in US English. I think it would leave most Americans scratching their heads in puzzlement.

Re: Power outage
Hey Tony - That's why we've decided on a generator that can run on propane. We already have propane tanks for the furnace & stove & our electrician said the generator can be set up to run off the existing tanks. We can no longer cut enough firewood to last the winter because of age & health problems...

Re: Power outage
Yikes, Bonnie! Two weeks? I can't imagine... It wasn't too bad for us. Except for no water or lights, everything else was normal. We were living in a small cabin with only wood heat & an outhouse. In our innocence, we thought we would have the large log shop turned into a house within a few years -...
