Re: Recorder
I was just about to say that I tortured my parents with "Three Blind Mice". I rolled the tune over in my head and suddenly realized it is the same as "Hot Cross Buns"...well, at least the first part is...

repetitively vs repeatedly
Heard in the wild the other day: "He denied the accusations repetitively" Is this an acceptable way to express this idea? Does it just sound odd to me because "denied repeatedly" has become a bit of a set phrase? Maybe the speaker meant something slightly different... the other guy was saying "wasn'...

Re: spare or save
I'd much rather have one of you guys spare me 200 dollars than spare myself 200 dollars.

Re: the last two days
I don't like any of them, either. In 1 and 2 "what happened" could have happened 10 years ago but, for some strange reason, it has only been important to know about it for the past couple of days. Tomorrow, it won't matter? Last week, it didn't matter? Sentence 3 gets closer but I'm sure most native...

Re: for the impression they make
" It seems that the sentence is saying that the dresses she chooses do indeed have a reasonable price, but that is not why she chooses them."
That's what is says to me, too...but then you clear it up with another sentence. Better late than never.

Re: Closure of the Wordwizard site
Thanks for the update, Phil. Even though there hasn't been a lot going on, I'd still check in every couple of days...and be glad to see it still hanging on.

Re: not even remotely
It's incorrect because it is unclear. They haven't taken a city (by most people's interpretation of the word "taken") or they haven't taken a city remotely (by some sort of "hands off" approach)? It's also incorrect on every other level.

Re: Scooter
If I felt that the context wasn't enough, I'd use motor (or moto) scooter. When I was younger we called them Vespas (even though they weren't all "real" Vespas. I also hear folks using mo-ped, regardless of whether they have pedals.

Re: Temperatures
Prize-fighters in Great Britain still have their weights announced in stone rather than pounds or kilograms. Is that still a measurement used for other things or is it just for body weight...or is it just for boxing?

Re: Temperatures
I grew up with the Imperial system and was in my early teens when "metrification" started in Canada. I use a strange mish-mash of the two. I use the metric system (because I have to) but still "think" in Imperial. If you told me the temperature was 27 degrees, I'd know it was pretty hot but I don't ...

That's the only way I've ever heard it used, over here. It's the same as "putting the kibosh" on something. You're shutting it down and it is not up for debate.

Re: the dog barking
The barking was coming from the house next door.
No need to mention the dog. We will all just assume it was a dog. If you meant that anything other than a dog was barking...I'm sure you would have said so.
