Most people would work out what you meant without too much thought.

Yes, but most are a bit cumbersome.

Re: Pluck

Thanks everyone. I did consider Plwc of course, but I can't find that word either. The area was a dreadful mess until relatively recently. I will have a search around and see if I can show you some then and now pictures. I actually remember the area without a blade of grass because of sulphuric acid...

Re: A spot at a restaurant

Not bad Steven and with two small changes either will do the job.

1. Whoever gets there first should find a table and keep our spot.
2. Whoever gets there first had better find a table and keep our seats.

Re: Bathtub

Steven, you have just come across another peculaiarity of the English Language.
It isn't, "there are a yellow thing, a brush and a black dish on the board".
It is, "there is a yellow thing, a brush and a black dish on the board".

Re: Pluck

Not at all possible Tony.
I hadn't come across pluck as lee before, and that is obviously a possible derivation.
Thank you

Re: Pluck

There has been some movement, although not a lot.

Someone has dragged up from the back of memory that a pluck could be a stream running FROM a larger stream or river rather than to it. Still nothing in writing though!

The Mongoose Principle:

Dear Petshop, Please send me two mongooses.

Dear Petshop, Please send me two mongeese.

Dear Petshop, Please send me a mongoose. Better still, make it two.

If you are not sure, write something that says the same thing that you know is right.

Re: 1st April

The same question is asked about Mothers Day, although the Mongoose Principle can be brought in and it can be called Mothering Sunday. I tend to think that in a situation like this, where the term is an idiom, that an apostrophe is superfluous. Hence, April Fools Day, Mothers Day, Fathers Day etc..

Pluck

I was asked a question in another place. There is a lake in Swansea called Pluck Lake, and the questioner wanted to know where the name came from. In the back of my mind I have a feeling that a stream of some sort was called a pluck, but I have not been able to confirm it. I don't think that it is W...

Re: Medicine

Quite a few years ago when I was married to my second wife we had five children between us, ranging in age from about 8 to 12. We decided to have a trip to Ireland on the ferry. Before we left the children lined up and I gave each on them an anti-seasick pill. We did the same on the return trip. The...
