Re: not in the usual way

In (b) I would change the comma to "but".

Re: use of affect and effect as nouns

Affect is a verb, A verb is an Action.
.
When something affects something else, it has an effect.
The affect happens first and the effect second, just as Affect comes first in the alphabet and Effect second.
.
Still convoluted I grant you, but it is a start.

Re: Religion

One way not to seem too inquisitive is to offer your own position first:
.
I am a Catholic. Do you have a faith?
I am a Muslim. Do you have a faith?
I am an atheist, Do you have a faith?
I don't have a faith. Do you?

Re: Offering seats to the elderly

I see that Sir John Armstrong Muir Gray is 77 years old. I wonder if he has ever been on a bus let alone a crowded one.

I wear glasses (not utilise) to see everything. I have been wearing them for 60 years now. I'm quite used to it!

Re: Religion - politics - weather

I am a (retired) politician, so yes, I do discuss politics openly. As an atheist I find that discussing religion can cause offence, so i avoid doing so. I do talk about the weather even though I live in a nation that is famous for rain.

Re: Cable TV

We don't have cable where I live, but of course we can and do stream from the internet. Personally though, I am grateful to the American cable company called TNT. They paid for a series called Will and I was an extra, sorry, SUPPORTING ARTISTE. I did a few weeks work and Margaret and I had a holiday...

Re: Not again

My friend and I drove into England to attend the funeral of a man who used to spend time with us organising an event in Wales. We arrived early and were a bit startled to see arrive someone we had no idea existed. Our colleague's identical twin!

Re: School Teacher

It was banned in schools from 1986 in the UK.
From next year it will be illegal in Wales for anyone, including parents, to smack children.
