Re: solace and consolation

I just wonder if the Latin goes further back toward something a cat might understand as she snoozes in a patch of sunshine on a cold day.

Re: Violin, viola.

I always called the instrument a vee-ola, and often say it when the apropos term would be "voilà".

Re: Finnegans Wake and beesknees

It's not so bad.
Though I will never get it done within the 2-week inter-library-loan time-limit.

Re: Damascene conversion

The steel named for the place also passes through the fire, takes quite a beating, and emerges better for it.

Finnegans Wake and beesknees

I have been ignorant of James Joyce and Finnegans Wake but thanks to an article about computers analyzing literature according to the probabilities of one word following another, and that Finnegans Wake has been found to be the least-predictable piece in the "English language" (!?), I have taken-up ...

Re: dog whistler issue

Dog-whistling, as I hear it, can be any kind of verbal trojan-horse, deliberately-delivered or not, in political speech, always an aspect of "framing". Examples I have noticed have been based on the brain's inability to process negatives. Do not think of elephants. Be calm and do not riot. One spoke...

Same down here. Edit; And from a site called Hunker.com: https://www.hunker.com/13402389/value-of-antique-stoves The earliest cast iron stoves were called five-plate or jamb stoves and were of German design. The 1740s brought six-plate close stoves and Benjamin Franklin's "Pennsylvania Fireplace." B...

"Cooker" has become synonymous with crock-pot-type appliances: rice-cooker, slow-cooker.

Re: Hob

The Venn diagram reference got me thinking...how cool would it be if the circles under the glass-top intersected in such a way that you could customize them for oversize pans...simmering gravy in the roaster-pan, for example? Then I thought that making it a touch-screen would be cool. Except it gets...
