Re: guttering

I actually thought this whole thread would be on bowling! I had completely forgotten about the troughs that carry rainwater away from houses. And I never dreamed it was about candles. I don't know if such a term is applicable in other countries, but if one fails to keep their bowling ball on the lan...

Re: penguin hole?

I meant by "the semantics game" that we were arguing which words best fit based on our own perceptions of them. I realize that I did not explain why I objected to your suggested word choice, but I will. I would be hesitant to use the word "license", as I do not believe that he is intending to argue ...

Re: That really amused me

I would change, "Last night, after drinking some bottles of beer. Sarah talked me into getting in bed with her. That really amused me." to: Last night, after drinknig a few beers [together?], Sarah convinced me to sleep with her. I wouldn't even say the last part because a "gentleman" doesn't kiss a...

Re: I wish you didn't/wouldn't smoke

Jerry may be from the Southern region/culture of the US. Since living down here, I've picked up the second person plural "y'all".

By the way, a few of our states have no smoking in public places as well, including restaurants, bars, and clubs.

Re: penguin hole?

I agree with you Erik and Russ, on the concept of "giving credence". I hope that I haven't missed many more of these misusages. I think I would change it to read: However, after careful examination this theological view presents several problems (1) it pigeon holes Jesus’ mission as coming solely to...

Re: Are you exaggerating?

Two more common answers that would be common in my conversations would be:

-Really?!
-Are you serious?

Re: That really amused me

Last night, after having a few beers with [Sarah], she convinced me to sleep with [Sam]. I had a great time.

That's how I would say it from what I'm pulling out of the original. I must confess though that I am not 100% sure what meaning you are getting at in your last phrase.

Re: penguin hole?

Erik, you are absolutely correct that I did have a time with it! All 38 pages. And, I'm sure that I did not catch everything. I edited that particular snippet: However, after careful examination this theological view presents several problems (1) it pigeon holes Jesus’ mission as coming solely to di...

"I'm buying" sounds weird to me. The others including "My treat" are interchangeable in my opinion.

Re: I wish you didn't/wouldn't smoke

Hello Jerry,

I wish you didn't smoke. - This one to me says that "you" smoke and I don't like it.
I wish you wouldn't smoke.- This one more says that "you" are smoking now, and I don't like it, so please stop. It could also have the same meaning of the first sentence.

penguin hole?

Okay, so I'm editing a friend's thesis and I needed to check to see if I was crazy because he keeps using the phrase "penguin hole" (3rd times the charm...). He's used it so much, that I don't know if I should even change it to pigeon hole! Has anyone heard this usage before or know of this phrases ...
